๐ก Spacing tips
- Tighter spacing can increase yield per sq ft but raises disease risk
- Staggered rows fit ~15% more plants than a grid
- Square foot gardening uses a 12"ร12" grid, fitting 1โ16 plants per square depending on size
- Sprawling plants like squash and cucumber need much more space than their listed spacing

Common Plant Spacing Guide
Plant spacing affects yield, airflow, and disease pressure. Here's a quick reference for common vegetables:
- Carrot, Radish: 2โ4 inches between plants, 12 inches between rows
- Lettuce, Spinach: 8โ12 inches between plants
- Pepper, Eggplant: 18 inches between plants, 24โ36 inch rows
- Tomato: 24โ36 inches between plants, 36โ48 inch rows
- Squash, Zucchini: 36โ48 inches in all directions
- Cucumber: 12 inches between plants on a trellis, 36 inches without
Grid vs. Staggered Planting
A simple grid layout is easiest to plan and manage. Staggered rows offset each row by half a spacing width โ this increases plant count by about 15% and can improve airflow between plants. Square foot gardening uses intensive 12ร12 inch squares, which is great for small beds and easy crop rotation.
