๐Ÿ’ก Spacing tips
  • Tighter spacing can increase yield per sq ft but raises disease risk
  • Staggered rows fit ~15% more plants than a grid
  • Square foot gardening uses a 12"ร—12" grid, fitting 1โ€“16 plants per square depending on size
  • Sprawling plants like squash and cucumber need much more space than their listed spacing

Common Plant Spacing Guide

Plant spacing affects yield, airflow, and disease pressure. Here's a quick reference for common vegetables:

  • Carrot, Radish: 2โ€“4 inches between plants, 12 inches between rows
  • Lettuce, Spinach: 8โ€“12 inches between plants
  • Pepper, Eggplant: 18 inches between plants, 24โ€“36 inch rows
  • Tomato: 24โ€“36 inches between plants, 36โ€“48 inch rows
  • Squash, Zucchini: 36โ€“48 inches in all directions
  • Cucumber: 12 inches between plants on a trellis, 36 inches without

Grid vs. Staggered Planting

A simple grid layout is easiest to plan and manage. Staggered rows offset each row by half a spacing width โ€” this increases plant count by about 15% and can improve airflow between plants. Square foot gardening uses intensive 12ร—12 inch squares, which is great for small beds and easy crop rotation.
